HOFSTADTER, RICHARD
HOFSTADTER, RICHARD (1916–1970), U.S. historian. Hofstadter was born in Buffalo, New York. After teaching at the University of Maryland he joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1946 and was named professor in 1952. His American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It (1948) synthesized the critical views of classic figures, rejecting Theodore Roosevelt, for example, as paranoid. The Age of Reform from Bryan to FDR (1955), which won a Pulitzer Prize, saw reformers as looking back to an archaic Jeffersonian ideal unsuited to modern needs. Anti-Intellectualism in American Life (1963) also won several awards. The Paranoid Style in American Politics (1965) emphasized right-wing failings. Hofstadter was a coauthor of The Development and Scope of Higher Education in the United States (1953), and The Development of Academic Freedom in the United States (1955). (Louis Filler)
